Shimojo Myorenji

Shimojo Myorenji Temple is a head temple of the Nichiren Shoshu sect. It was founded in 1324 (the first year of the Shochu era) by Jakujitsubo Nichika, a disciple of Nikko Shonin, on the site of the residence of the Nanjo family of Ueno-go.

It belongs to the Fuji sect, which inherits the lineage of Nikko Shonin, one of the six senior disciples of Nichiren Shonin, and was formerly counted as one of the five major head temples of the sect, known as the Fuji Five Mountains: Kitayama Honmonji, Nishiyama Honmonji, Taisekiji, Koizumi Kuonji, and Shimojo Myorenji.
