Taisekiji Temple is the head temple of the Nichiren Shoshu sect and was founded in 1290 (Shoō 3) by Nichiren Shonin's disciple and one of the Six Elders, Nikko Shonin, with the assistance of Nanjō Tokimitsu, the local lord of Ueno-go.
The vast grounds, covering approximately 70 hectares, include the five-story pagoda (an important cultural property), the Mikage-do Hall (a prefecturally designated cultural property), and the Sanmon Gate (a prefecturally designated cultural property). The weeping cherry trees along the approach to the temple and the Yoshino cherry trees at Jotogamine are also famous cherry blossom spots in the city.
It was once counted as one of the five major head temples of the Nikko sect of Buddhism: Kitayama Honmonji, Nishiyama Honmonji, Taisekiji, Koizumi Kuonji, and Shimojo Myorenji.
