Hitoana Fujikoshi Station, Hitoana Sengen Shrine, Hitoana Docks
The Hitoana Fujiko ruins are located within Hitoana Sengen Shrine, and are one of the components of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site, demonstrating the value of Mount Fuji as an "object of worship." The ruins include Hitoana Cave, the training ground for Fujiko founder Hasegawa Kakugyo, where he is said to have passed away after a period of ascetic practices, and the remains of around 230 monuments and pagodas left by Fujiko followers.
Hitoana Cave is a vent formed by lava flows during the eruption of Mt. Fuji, and is approximately 83 meters long. Inside it are a shrine, three monuments, and four stone Buddha statues. Permission is required to tour the cave, and volunteer guides provide tours on weekends (reservations required, free of charge). Entry into the cave without permission is prohibited.
There are spots where you can see Mt. Fuji from the torii gate at the entrance to the temple grounds, and also from over the Fujiko ruins.
