The Oshika-kubo ruins are an archaeological site dating back to the early Jomon period, and are believed to be one of the oldest examples of settlement remains in Japan. In 2008, it was designated as a national historic site because it is "the remains of a settlement from the early period of sedentary life, with the topography of that time, such as lava and buried valleys, remaining, and providing valuable materials, along with pottery and stone tools, that allow us to imagine life at that time, making it an extremely important site for considering the housing structures of the same period."
